The WINMAR/Dustin Joint Venture worked with Devrouax + Purnell architects to renovate the existing historic building, build a new 42k sf addition, and create a 50-space underground parking garage. The renovation and addition incorporates core spaces for use designated by design, as part of the DC Public Schools design and development standards. New features include a main office with parent volunteer space, a welcome center, health suite, new pre-K/kindergarten classrooms, staff lounge, and a renovated cafeteria. The new multipurpose room/gymnasium opens through glass folding doors to the outdoor play areas, arranged to accommodate after-hours/community events and incorporate more green and natural light to the interiors. With integration of the old and the new, the building transitions gradually as it moves from the connection to the existing building, and turns the corner, creating a prominent west and south facade. On the western site, a paved plaza allows for the extension of education to outdoors, and the green space provides for outdoor community gatherings.
